Clinical Notes Formula Reference

  • Formula: Corrected Calcium = Measured Total Calcium + 0.8 * (4.0 - Serum Albumin).
  • Approximately 40-45% of serum calcium is bound to protein, primarily albumin.
  • Hypoalbuminemia can cause a falsely low measured total calcium level (pseudohypocalcemia).
  • Normal physiological total serum calcium range is generally 8.5 - 10.5 mg/dL.
  • Note: In critically ill patients or those with severe acid-base disturbances, measuring ionized calcium is clinically preferred over calculated correction.
